D.C.: Penn Social

Penn Social is quickly becoming the after-party hot spot in D.C. Located centrally in Chinatown at, 801 E Street, NW, this hangout is perfect to head to after eating dinner at any of the many {delicious delicious} restaurants in the neighborhood, or meeting up with girls nightfriends for happy hour at Bar Louie or Lucky Strike {only a short walk away}. You’ll find a combination of elements that attract a diverse crowd, and a good time.

The street level bar and out door patio offer the “low-key dive bar” attraction. With soft dim lighting, bartenders who pour generously and most importantly a cabinet full of board games sure to remind you of family game night from eons ago. Except now you get to play  with a few drinks in your system and the people on the opposite couch that you just decided were your new best friends.

After that head downstairs where the real party starts. The lower level has everything the  upstairs offers, except amped up a bit. There’s everything from a DJ and dance floor, to skee ball and  retro arcade games {and everything in between: a digital juke box, pool,  foosball,  beer pong, and giant over sized  Connect 4 and Jenga}. connect 4The weekend DJs have  never disappointed in their music selection, constantly switching up genres and making it easy to dance all night. But there’s plenty of hightop tables and bar stools to sit at if you need a break from the action.

My favorite part, besides all of the above mentioned has to be the mural covering the walls of the downstairs. The all black and white ceiling to floor sketches address all things DC: political comedy, Redskins super stars, historical landmarks and monuments, inside jokes and hilarious quotes. Look close and you’ll discover something new and highly inappropriate every time you go. As a DC native the relics will leave you feeling not only welcomed, but in on the joke

Dick to the hole

A few tips when visiting:

  • you’ll find better drink prices at the upstairs bar {which of course you can carry with you back downstairs}
  • there’s a new $10 cover after 10pm, but a little negotiating at the door  can save you a few bucks
  • and the upstairs games are free, but bring some quarters to get in on the arcade action below.

Oh yea and of course there’s food! But is that really why you’re going?
