Looking For a Juice Cleanse? 

Hey hey hey! 

Let me start by saying, this blog post will be about my experience with a juice cleanse I bought. This doesn’t guarantee that your experience will be the same. The company has not hired me to share any information with you. Last but not least please consult your doctor to confirm that doing a cleanse is right for you.
Okay now that we got that out the way. Let me tell you about my cleanse. 

I’ve been wanting to do a 3 day juice cleanse for quite some time.But the opportunity to stop eating yummy food never really presented itself. 

For example I could eat this yummy taco right here or go on a juice cleanse. Tacos always won.

So when I found out that I had to get my wisdom teeth removed. I thought to myself this would be the perfect time! I can’t eat anyway. 

Another internal battle I was having was should I buy the produce and juice it myself or buy should I buy pre-made juices. There are benefits to both. I decided if I was going to do a juice cleanse, I wanted to maximize all the nutritional benefits. 

I knew the fresher the juice the more beneficial it would be. However I knew I was too lazy to buy all the fresh produce and juice it myself because I was having surgery.

So I started roaming the internet.

My requirements were: 

  • No added sugar
  • 100% plant based
  • 100% raw 
  • No GMO
  • Under $200

Eventually I stumbled upon RawGeneration.

Not only did they check off my list,they also had a high protein plant based cleanse.

When I brought my the protein cleanse RawGeneration was(and still is)having a sale for 70% off any cleanse.

I brought two 3-day cleanses $60 each + $38.30 for shipping.I ordered on a Thursday the juices came on a Saturday. They came frozen and I immediately put them into my freezer.

RawGeneration provides great instruction on how to preserve your juices and perform the cleanse so no need for me to dive into that. But I had a throughly enjoyable experience using their product. All the juices were yummy ( I should preface that by saying that I’m used to eating fruits and veggies). 

My favorite was:And my boyfriend, bless his heart decided to do the cleanse with me, his favorite was: This was a close second for both of us: And the juices that we thought were going to be gross but were surprisingly tasty: The boyfriend and I survived the cleanse. We both had craving here and there but never really felt hungry.

As for wisdom teeth extraction. I survived that too. I had no problems taking my med, no nausea, and no pain. Now that I’m done with the cleanse I’m exploring all my mushy food options.

Garden Pasta Salad

Nobody wants to slave away in a hot kitchen during the summer.   Especially if you have a small city kitchen like mine. So here is a quick delicious recipe that hits almost every section of the food pyramid making it a well balanced meal.

Lets gets started….

For this recipe you will need,

ingredients

1/2 avocado.

1/2 of a small onion.

1 small tomato.

1/2 a cup of spinach.

About a 1 and 1/2 of Farfalle ( bowtie pasta).

1 teaspoon of Sriracha.  *optional

1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard.

1/4 cup of Blue Cheese Dressing.

1 can of tuna.

1 tablespoon of ginger.

1/2 cup of sweet peas.

1/8 teaspoon of basil and parsley.

salt and pepper to your liking.

Olive oil for drizzling.

To cook the pasta, I followed the cooking directions on the box.

Then I proceeded to cup my veggies. I cubed my onions but thinly  sliced the tomatoes, spinach, and avocado.

When the pasta was almost finished boiling, I threw the  sweet peas into the boiling water for about 2 minutes.  Then I drained the pasta along with my sweet peas .

While the pasta and the peas were still in the strainer, I ran cold water over it. This allowed me to eat chilled pasta right away verses putting it in the fridge. However I would still recommend this step even if you don’t plan to eat it right away.

Next I threw my pasta and peas into a bowl and started adding the rest of the ingredients, then I stirred it all up. Last but not least, I drizzled a little Olive oil and Voila!

Whipped pineapple green smoothie

  • Spinach – contains blood pressure reducing proteins called peptides, cancer fighting phytonutrients, and bone building molecules of vitamin K.
  • Pineapple (frozen)-  supplies a healthy dose of manganese – a trace mineral essential for generating energy and antioxidants. They also contain vit C, which supports immunity. Can also be soothing for digestion.
  • Apple – Believed to fight several types of cancer, antioxidant-rich apples help to fight heart disease, weight gain, and high cholesterol. The fiber contained in apples is vital in preventing cholesterol re-absorption.
  • Oranges – Vitamin C, healing properties associated with a wide variety of phytonutrient  compounds. Also offers significant protection against mouth, throat and stomach cancer.
  • Orange Juice – add 2-4 ounces to smooth out your blend and add a little sweetness

Combine all ingredients and BLEND!

Blending/Juicing Fact: Smoothies are a great way to add greens to your diet. The life purpose of all greens is to produce chlorophyll. Chlorophyll augments your body’s ability to produce hemoglobin which in turn strengthens the delivery of oxygen to your cells

Getting Motivated to Workout

If you’re anything like me you’re probable having some trouble getting motivated or rather STAYING motivated to keep up with your “Eat Clean, Train Mean” motto newly adopted for the summer. The bikini countdown had begun and every time you have one of those *insert delicious treats here* that your coworkers brought in, or skip a few valuable days at the gym, you feel the evil pudge monster celebrating yet another victory at your expense  .

Just do it

If you’ve got some extra space on your walls, try making a motivation mural. Include pictures of healthy food you like, motivating pictures of yourself previously at your goal weight, and lots of positive phrases to keep you going through self-doubt and laziness.  Also you can opt to add a countdown chart if you’re goal is until a certain vacation or event date, or do a pounds countdown to keep on track if you have a specific scale number in mind.

 

Get creative! Use lots of colors and fonts, so that your wall is pretty and interesting to look at. THEN actually take the time to look at it each day. At first when it’s new your eye will automatically be drawn to it, but after a few days it will just blend into the background, easy to ignore, and you just might forget why it’s there. So, each day maybe after you wake up, or as you’re heading out to the gym, take a minute to take it all in, and read some of your written phrases out load to reinforce their message. Most importantly keep your goal in mind (have this written out on the wall as well), this goal being different than a specific weight. Have a goal regarding what you want for yourself, i.e.: a healthy self-image, to stay committed for X amount of time, – something that you can feel proud about even if you don’t hit that number on the scale.  Good luck!

Honey Granola Fruit Smoothie

  • Strawberries– loaded with heart protecting, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory phenols.
  • Oranges – Vitamin C, healing properties associated with a wide variety of phytonutrient  compounds. Also offers significant protection against mouth, throat and stomach cancers
  •  Granola/Oats– may help lower your cholesterol and prevent certain chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer. Whole grain oats and nuts, two main ingredients in most granola, contain dietary fiber.
  • Greek Yogurt –  can have twice as much protein as regular yogurt. The extra protein will help you feel full and leave you feeling satisfied. Also contains probiotics, live microorganisms. These bacteria microbes may help improve digestive function and the immune system
  • Honey – A natural sweetener, not to mention, recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis.

Combine all ingredients and BLEND!

Blending/Juicing Fact:When we eat solid foods, it takes awhile for our digestive systems to break down that food we’ve consumed. This gives it extra time to consume fats and oils out of our foods that we don’t necessarily need and then convert it to fat. With a liquified version of fruits and vegetables entering our systems, the body can immediately convert the food into nutritive value while there is less time to convert other items into fat cells for energy later.

Keeping it Spicy

I’ve never really cared for cauliflower. To me it was just albino broccoli. Recently I saw a recipe that made me want to reevaluate my feelings toward cauliflower. This recipe was so good I had to pass it along.

But before I give you the recipe here are some of the benefits of Cauliflower.   white-cauliflower-head-lo

It’s full of Vitamin C and Potassium just like Spinach and Kale.

Has a high dosage of fiber which keeps you regular.

Has a high dosage of Folic Acid which is necessary for cell development.

Okay, so the recipe is called Buffalo Cauliflower. But I also noticed that if you don’t add the buffalo sauce you still end up with a tasty treat. So here is a two for one recipe.

Buffalo Cauliflower Or Breaded Cauliflower

1 cup of water 1 cup of flour

2 tsp. of garlic powder

2 tsp. of onion power 1 head of cauliflower, chopped into pieces 1 cup buffalo or hot sauce 1 Tbsp. olive oil or melted vegan margarine

1 ½ cups of Italian bread crumbs

*Optional 2 tbsp. of Sugar

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  2. Combine the water or soy milk, flour, and garlic powder in a bowl and stir until well combined.
  3. Coat the cauliflower pieces with the flour mixture and them coat with bread crumbs
  4. Place in a shallow baking dish. Bake for 18 minutes. (The cauliflower can also be fried instead of baked for a crispier texture.)IMG_5797

    If you don’t like buffalo sauce no need to go any further….If you like to walk on the wild side proceed to step 5.

     

  5. While the cauliflower is baking, combine your buffalo sauce and olive oil or margarine in a small bowl. *You can add some sugar to this mixture
  6. Pour the hot sauce mixture over the baked cauliflower and continue baking for an additional 5 to 8 minutes.

Go Green

Kale and Spinach are two of my favorite green leafy vegetables.    These two vegetables are also excellent sources of many vitamins and nutrients that keep you looking young and fresh.

For example……

Kale:  Kale

Is high in Vitamin A which is good for hair, skin, and nails.

Is high in Vitamin C which helps to build up the immune system.

Is high in Vitamin K which promotes, bone health, brain functions and is an anti-inflammatory agent.

Is high in Calcium which promotes bone health.

Is high in Iron which is good for the blood and promotes oxygen flow throughout the body.

Spinach:spinach

Is also high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K.

Has more potassium than a banana; potassium is good for maintaining blood pressure and fluid pressure.

Has beta carotene which is great for eye health.

Is also high in iron.

Both of these veggies can be cooked a variety of ways. Here are two quick and easy recipes that will help boost your vegetable intake!

Kale ChipsIMG_5811

If you love anything crunchy then you’ll really love these. I never feel guilty about eating the whole bag because of all the vitamins Kale provides.

Ingredients

1 bag of Kale

2 tsp. of sea salt.

2 tbsp. of oil (I used grape seed oil)

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  2. Wash and thoroughly dry Kale. Making sure the kale is completely dry is the most important step. The dryer the kale the crunchier it is.
  3. Drizzle the olive oil and sprinkle the salt.
  1. Place Kale on a nonstick pan and Bake for about 10 to 15 minutes if you see the edges of the kale start browning it is time to take them out.

Coconut Curry SpinachIMG_5859

I love curry I never thought to combine spinach and curry until recently but I was pleasantly surprised and it’s super easy to make. I paired this with jasmine rice for an Asian inspired meal.

Ingredients

½ bag of spinach,

¼ cup of creamed coconut milk (My personal favorite is from Trader Joes)

2 tbsps. of curry powder

1 tsp. of cumin (optional)

2 tsp. of salt

½ of a small onion sliced

¼ cup of sliced peppers

  1. Pour the oil and curry into a pan on the stove at medium heat.
  2. Add the cumin and stir both the curry and the cumin into the oil.
  3. Once the oil starts to sizzle add the onions and peppers along with 1 tsp of salt.
  4. Cook until the onions start to look clear then place the coconut cream in the pan and stir occasionally.
  5. After about a minute add the spinach and the last tsp of salt.
  6. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

Why Juice… Blend… Extract…?

Did you have any idea that you could be damaging your digestive system by not chewing your foods enough?! In short, this happens by overworking your system  as it tries to extract the nutrients from bulky improperly chewed chunks of food.  Overtime you will become less and less effective at absorbing and utilizing vital nutrients, making you weaker and more prone to sickness as you age. Pretty much: Even when you’re eating foods that are good for you, your body isn’t always able to access and make use of the full amount of nutrients.

By juicing or blending fruits, veggies and nuts, you not only cut down on the work that your body needs to do, but you make it much easier and faster to consume to recommended number of servings each day {remember the good ole food pyramid). This can be especially hard for serious veggie haters like myself. The very cool and (unbelievable by non believers} thing about this process is that the sweetness of the fruits you use usually covers up any taste of vegetables {depending on what you choose}. I swear! And they make great on-the-go breakfasts.

The biggest difference between blending/extracting and traditional “juicing” is that by blending you retain all the nutrients and fiber that are in packed in parts that would usually get thrown away i.e. seeds, peels,  and even stems.

Face Yoga

I have fallen in love with yoga. I get to work out at a slower pace, stay toned, improve my flexibility and mediation. I’m currently learning how to do a hand stand. Once I learn I will be doing a handstand everywhere I go lol.

I found this video on YouTube that I thought was pretty cool.

It all about face yoga! It’s supposed to keep you looking young and fresh. Ranjana Khan takes you through the steps of face yoga. She is super cute. I just love this video.
